Dev Diary: Building metaphorical switches

Early this week we were having a conversation about giving away in-game items to email subscribers, when Chris realized we… actually didn’t have any way to do that. So this week was spent designing and implementing Feature Switches.

The idea is that every account will have access to several features at the metaphorical flip of a switch. We only had these switches to begin with:

After we’re done creating the other features we should be able to give anyone access to Acts 1, 2, 3, or all of them, depending on what you purchased. So now anyone who gets the full game should be able to play through all three acts with the same character, using any or all (or none!) of the special giveaway items they’ve gotten.

Isn’t that just the way it goes? Just when you think you’ve built a great bicycle, you realize you forgot to add the wheels.
