Essentials of nerd culture you’ve missed
I have a confession to make: I didn’t watch Star Wars until 2012, when I was 25 years old. I wasn’t born at the right time to really enjoy the by now legendary original trilogy, and I didn’t live in the US to feel the ripple effect it had on culture and the astonishing fanbase it developed.
Something about a princess and soldiers that can’t shoot straight, right?
I consider myself a geek, nerd, retro gamer, lover of obscure literature and cult classic films. And being a fan of Star Wars is almost synonymous with being a part of geek culture. Which is why I’m a bit ashamed to admit: after I finally watched Star Wars I just… didn’t “get it.” Sadly I’d been so inundated by all things Star Wars that I just didn’t get what all the fuss was about.
Even those of us who consider ourselves “hardcore” can miss some essential parts of geek culture. Chris can’t follow when anyone talks about Game of Thrones or Skyrim because he just hasn’t kept up.
Our intern Jessica has never been interested in card games like Magic the Gathering. She admits that she’s never even read a Harry Potter book and doesn’t see what the big deal is.
So much falls under the umbrella term of “geek culture” that it’s no surprise some things just don’t appeal to everyone. Are there any shows, games, activities that it seems like the rest of the geek culture loves but you could just never get into?
